Church of St Ignatius - Dubrovnik

Church of St Ignatius

On the southern edge of the Old Town, you will find the ornate Jesuit church of St Ignatius. Walk up a flight of steps which some say is the romantic baroque staircase which is modelled on the Spanish Steps in Rome (1738). The church itself was built between 1667 and 1725 by architect Andrea Pozzo.

Like most Jesuit churches of the period this church was modeled on the Gesù in Rome, the mother church of the Jesuits. Both the stairway and the square in front of the church are used as venues at the Dubrovnik Summer Festival.

Starting in May, Mass in English is held on Sundays at 11:00. We attended Sunday Mass on 18 June 2017. The view inside the church was simply breathtaking.

Our Lady Pray For Us

The Church of St Ignatius is single nave, with side chapels and a semicircular divided apse. It is decorated by magnificent Baroque frescoes with scenes from life of St. Ignatius de Loyola painted by Gaetano Garcia.

The church belfry houses the oldest bell in Dubrovnik, cast in 1355 by Viventius and his son Viator.
