Big Fountain of Onofrio stands in the square which opens out immediately after the Pile gate. This is one of the best known monuments in the city.
It was built in 1438-44 by the Neapolitan architect Onofrio de la Cava who was also responsible for designing the city's water supply system. He decided to draw the water from the River Durbovacka for this purpose.
This ancient water supply was completed in 1438 and supplied the town with fresh water for 500 years! Trough the mouths of 16 stone "maskerona" (gargoyle heads) water flows into the pool encircling the fountain.
The imposing fountain once had two levels, but the upper level was destroyed in the earthquake in 1667.
