Church of the Assumption

Cathedral of the Assumption is the oldest church in Penang. The Church of the Assumption was founded in 1786.  It is located in Farquhar Street, George Town, within the heritage core zone of the city. The church is the third oldest Catholic church in Malaysia.

Proudly preserved, the 160-year old cathedral is a world heritage church and was founded in 1786 by Captain Francis Light.
Here we are attending Sunday mass. It was said that after this mass the church is to be closed for renovation.

It was the first Roman Catholic church in Malaysia’s northern region and was also the first church in Malaysia built by the British.

In 1860 the church was renovated into the structure it is today: a cross-shaped building with two bell towers and a huge altar.
