Grand Shanghai @ Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel Singapore

Have you ever wondered whether there is a dining restaurant where one is able to relive the nostalgia of Shanghai in the 1940s in cosmopolitan Singapore? Well, if not for the 1-for-1 Hairy Crab  promotion, I would not have discovered Grand Shanghai, Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel's hottest unique dining concept. It was a 6 course meal priced at $128++. Peichin and I had our dinner there on Friday evening, 22 October 2010. Check out the food.

The first dish was shredded chicken salad. As an appetizer this is an attractive presentation. However the shredded chicken was a little tough.

Before we could try our 1st dish, we were served the 2nd dish already. If only the waitress paid a little more attention to the customers in terms of serving. The second dish was braised beancurb with Crab Roe in Thick Soup. It was delicious. Served hot, the thick soup certainly adds warmth to the throat as we ate the 2nd dish.

The highlight of the evening. The 3rd dish of steamed Hairy Crab. The waitress came with 2 plates of Hairy Crab, she removed the shells of the crab, hence this is the flesh of the crab to be eaten. There were lots of crab roe in my crab, fresh and very meaty. We spent at least 30min trying to complete the crab dish, yes, not easy, trying to get the meat from the crab legs and the claws. At the end of the 3rd dish, our fingers were just too tired to move due to the fishing of the crab meat.

The 4th dish was Deep-Fried Fish with Sweet and Sour Sauce and Pinenut. It was crispy and we enjoyed how the sweet and source sauce added to the flavour of the fish. Certainly a dish to try- wish it was a bigger portion though.

The 5th dish has to be my favourite dish. It is none other than Steamed Dumplings with Crab Roe. Being a Tim Sum person, I love chinese food especially steamed dumplings. Yet among all the dumplings I have tasted so far, this has to be the best. Could it be due to the crab roe? When you just eat a portion of the dumpling, the juice just flows into your mouth and it is simply delicious. Do they have this on the tim sum menu? This dish is worth a consideration for future visit.

For our final course, we were treated to black glutinous with ice cream. This is something creative. This is the 1st time I am having ice cream with black glutinous and I enjoyed the dish, especially for one who has a sweet tooth.

Overall it was an enjoyable dinning experience at Grand Shanghai. We discovered another chinese restaurant. Good food, nice ambience. Bit pricy, but for the experience, it is worth a try.
